MULTI-STR3AM
organizes Workshop on biorefinery during LiMBAC 2022
|
|
|

| The 4th
edition of the Lisbon Microalgae Biotechnology Advanced Course –
LiMBAC 2022 has counted with an afternoon dedicated to MULTI-STR3AM
biorefinery workshop. This Advanced Course, which is a reference in
the microalgae biotechnology sector, was organised by A4F last September.
The LiMBAC 2022 has counted with 23 different experts from the algae
sector providing lectures, practical training activities, visits and
networking moments for the 30 attendees from 16 countries. A special
MULTI-STR3AM workshop was held, counting with technical talks from
Cristina Matos, Head of Biorefinery at A4F; Alberto Reis, Deputy head
of Bioenergy Unit at LNEG; Teresa Crespo, Head of the Food Safety
& Microbiology at iBET; and Carla Brazinha, Assistant Researcher
at iBET.
The workshop introduced the development of a sustainable
multi-strain, multi-method, multi-product microalgae biorefinery,
tackling challenges and alternative process solutions for the
different microalgae biomass fractioning. Also, the current
regulatory landscape for microalgae application was presented, being
an important driver for future microalgae consumption market.
Afterwards, a group activity was organized, incentivizing four teams
to analyse each a different microalgae strain and propose a
biorefinery process. Finally, each team presented its ideal
biorefinery solution.

People in the European Union can consume new
types of microalgae thanks to Czech scientists
|
|
|

| The Czech
Ministry of Agriculture, after several months of proceedings with all
EU member states, has decided that additional selected species of the
microalgae Chlorella can be consumed without lengthy registration.
This decision is valid for the entire territory of the European
Union. The Ministry based its decision on the results of many years
of research done by the Institute of Microbiology of the Czech
Academy of Sciences – Algatech Centre in Třeboň, Czech Republic.

MULTI-STR3AM
is presented during EnhanceMicroAlgae Project Workshop
|
|
|

| MULTI-STR3AM
project was presented by Laura Monteiro, Senior R&D Project
Manager at A4F, during the workshop "Latest developments in
microalgae science, start-up creation, industrialization and
experience sharing to overcome gaps and barriers to innovation and
markets" linked to the extension of the EnhanceMicroAlgae
project. The workshop counted with experts in the field of
microalgae approaching different aspects of the sector,
mainly the difficulties that prevent it from taking
off. Laura Monteiro highlighted the importance of
biorefineries and the exploitation of multi-strains for multi-products.
The workshop took place in La Rochelle, France. Learn more about

Heterotrophic media optimization in
MULTI-STR3AM
|
|
|

Phycom, is leading MULTI-STR3AM project on strain validation and
biomass production. Their work focuses on the scalability of algae
biomass output, having optimised the culture media for various
algae species, including Parachlorella
kessleri, from the shared validated algae strains of
IMIC / ALGATECH partner. The media optimisation has resulted
in a higher concentration of protein content in the algae biomass;
previously, around 25% to more than 40% protein content. By
validating the culture optimisation, Phycom developed various algae
in-house strains that behave equally to the provided strains within
the project. The medium optimisation allowed an increase in the
cultivation rates for Chlorella
sorokiniana and Chlorella
vulgaris strains, further ensuring the economic
feasibility of algae production. The medium optimisation, colour
mutation, and nutrient content have created better
commercialisation opportunities.
